Metropolis
In this special edition of Citizen Suggests we highlight one single film. Fittingly so, it is one of the greatest films ever made. Made in 1927 by the renowned director Fritz Lang it still packs one hell of a punch today. The epic story mixed with the cinematography, special effects, production design, costuming and overall grand scale still keeps you glued to the screen. It truly is a timeless masterpiece.
This edition, titled The Complete Metropolis, is more than just a re-release. The film has been restored with 25 minutes of lost footage. Old Hollywood folklore always proclaimed there was another version of Metropolis out there but no one could ever substantiate it until 2008 when packed away in a closet in Argentina someone found a pristine 16mm dupe negative of the original version.
It’s not just new footage either; finding the original version allowed the film to be re-edited to the standard that Fritz Lang intended for the film.
Your ears will be happy too as this version has the full original score by Gottfried Huppertz.
You can read all about the restoration of the film and find plenty of other information over at the official Kino International website. The Complete Metropolis is now available on DVD and BlueRay.
